December 21, 2012 came and went. We weren’t wiped out with a meteor or some millennia comet. Massive earthquakes didn’t rip apart and then sink the world’s continents. Every volcano on the planet didn’t simultaneously erupt darkening the skies and freezing or choking out the entire population of life on the planet.
For the majority of the world it was business as usual. People went to work, went Christmas shopping, made love, and went about their daily routines. Other people robbed banks and other various entities, murdered and raped, sold and took illegal drugs, and committed dozens of other types of crimes. You know, business as usual.
What no one knew, on that day and for a long time afterward, is that life on the planet had been forever changed by the prick of a needle. Indeed the very course of human evolution had been drastically altered by a scientist who would later lie and claim good intentions.
The planet would be fine. It would continue to circle the sun and perhaps in another dozen millennia life, and not death, would once again walk through the world. The current inhabitants, on the other hand, were screwed. The human race was going to need heroes by the busload. This is the story of one. Perhaps the most important one.

Nothing fancy-just dead. That’s what I had told my wife I would do to anyone that harmed her or my daughter and I had meant it. I never actually thought that I would be gearing up to kill the man that murdered her, my unborn son, and my best friend. That’s just crazy right? Never the less I found myself sailing through the Bahamas and then on to Cuba so that not only could I keep my word but so that I could also finally find some justice for my family.
Is it justice or is it murder? You decide as I’m still not sure. You see it isn’t the first time that I’ve killed. I killed for my country during my stint in the Marines. Is this really that different? I’m killing a murderer that escaped justice through money and politics. If it is murder should I consider myself on par with my father? He killed my mother in front of me when I was four for a reason that still eludes me to this day.
Be sure to let me know what you think.
Either way here I am back in the world I’ve deserted for the past year. It seems to have changed a bit. People seem healthier than ever. I’m even stronger and faster than I had been while in the Marines. I thought it was the hard work I had done while building my new home but it seems that everyone is getting in shape.
I keep meeting people that I could only describe as fiercely driven. Why is that? Had I been like that when I had built my home? My adoptive father had said something to that effect. Was I driven now?
What’s up with the women in the world? Every time I turn around a beautiful woman is asking me to share her bed. Did I miss a sexual revolution during my self induced seclusion? What else have I missed? Why is the world pregnancy rate so high? What the hell is going on in China?
Above all of that someone please tell me one thing. Since the death of my wife just over a year ago I have only met one woman I would consider having a relationship with. What I’d like to know is why did she have to be in the middle of the place I was going to kill my wife’s murderer in?

Did someone just say, “Zombies!”?

This book grabs you by the brain, and heart, and refuses to let go. I laughed, I cried, and sometimes I wanted to do both. The raw emotion translated to written word rings true, and so do the improbable series of events surrounding the life of William Newton. His chronicle of life as a foster child following the brutal events of his young life are enough material to make a book by itself, but here his path to manhood is just the prelude.

I loved the interaction between the characters, as well as the recognition that some families are born and other are the ones we make for ourselves. The parallel trips, one through his childhood and into his adult life and the other as a man embarking on a mission of vengeance, run a true course through the book. This book is a roller coaster ride, especially as the tension builds once as he gets to the resort and tries to deal with his emotions while lying and scheming to carry out his self-appointed mission. Read this book if you like action, adventure and tortured heroes.

Surprisingly really liked this murder mystery thriller, despite the fact that it badly needed a decent copy editor. The story draws the reader in, and teases the reader by slowly divulging the backstory about the main character. The writing style was a bit choppy, with not very elegant prose, but I didn't mind that because it sort of fits with the main character. Once I started to read this book, I wanted to keep reading until I was finished. Looking forward to reading the next book.
I really got hooked on the character and those around him. I was amazed that this was Mr. McLaughlin's first book. Only a few typos. I wish it were in paperback, there are a few people I know who would enjoy reading it!
This book was well written with good character development. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read.
Enjoyed and didn't want to put it down. Thanks for the great story going to upload the next book! See you at the end of the next one!
An awesome book.. well worth the price the book itself is well written, suitably long and worth reading. Hurry with book 2, i ant to know what happens, good cliff hanger at the end.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't disappointed. William's (the lead character's) life is extraordinary and makes a fabulous story! This book will make you think. It brings up thoughts about life and love that may cause you to think about your own life story. A good book is hard to put down, but a great book will bring you to think about life's hard questions and leave you feeling something. Sad, happy, excited; it's all in there. I highly recommend it and can't wait to read the second one!
Supernatural is in right now, but you don't need it. I was expecting Zombies to appear based on readers' review, and was happy not to find them. I bought this book out of curiosity because I know the writer. Don't worry, I won't give away your secret, Charming. I was pleasantly surprised. I put a aside a best seller library book to read this. Well done! Adventure, action, romance, sex, and just a little humor. I love that the nurses keep taking his pants! I'd be glad to help you with editing if you would read and critique my soon to be published manuscript.
